How to Move Beyond “Good Enough”

Updated: May 20

…and find a spark of awesome every day

Let’s talk about “good enough.”

You’re doing all the right things—eating well(ish), staying active, stretching a little, maybe meditating when you remember. You’re not in terrible pain. You’re functioning. You can do the groceries, get through your workday, go for a walk and maybe even join a gym class or two.

So, you’re good. Or rather... good enough.

But here’s the thing: good enough can be dangerously close to not good at all.

Because when it comes to how we move and feel, there’s a wide spectrum.

On one end is discomfort, stiffness and pain. Just a step above that is the state most of us accept as normal—functioning but often feels like an effort. Or where you avoid certain things because you're afraid it might hurt.

Then, further along the spectrum, you can manage pretty well for most things but there's a sense of tension at times or you still occasionally experience niggles that slow you down. Further still there’s ease, grace and even delight. Movement that feels light, coordinated and enjoyable.

The problem is, we often stop climbing that scale once we’re out of pain. We settle for “getting by,” forgetting there’s a whole other level where movement can feel really good. Where your body responds with a quiet, confident yes instead of a cautious maybe (or worse, a hell, no!).

Getting Out of Pain is the First Step but Not the Last

Pain gets our attention like nothing else. And getting out of pain is a powerful, necessary goal. But once the worst is behind us, many people stop there—relieved but still guarded, still restricted.

This is where the real opportunity begins. Getting out of pain isn’t the finish line; it’s the starting gate. And Feldenkrais doesn’t just help you manage pain—it helps you reorganise your whole movement system so you’re not constantly flirting with the edge of discomfort. You begin to move in ways that are sustainable, fluid, and genuinely enjoyable.

We’ve Been Trained to Settle

We tend to accept minor pain, niggles, stiffness and tension as normal—just a part of aging, stress or modern life. We tell ourselves:

  • “Well, at least it doesn’t hurt all the time.”

  • “It’s just tight when I wake up.”

  • “This is just what it’s like at my age.”

And so we stop seeking better. We stop looking for ease. We start calling “not too bad” a win.

But what if your body has way more capacity than you’ve been giving it credit for?

Movement as Mindfulness, Awareness as Access

This is where Feldenkrais comes in.

It’s not about fixing you. It’s about helping you tune in. Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® lessons (or "Not Yoga" as I like to call them), gently invite you to notice how you’re moving—not how far, or how fast, or whether it looks good from the outside, but how it feels from the inside.

That kind of awareness is magic. It’s like turning the dimmer switch back up.

When you pause, feel, and adjust—even in the tiniest ways—you give your brain and body fresh information. Your nervous system lights up. New patterns become possible. You start choosing better, rather than defaulting to barely.

And that’s when you start finding your spark of awesome.

It's the Little Shifts That Make the Big Difference

A more comfortable turn of your head. Easier breathing. Feeling grounded when you stand, instead of collapsing into one hip. A walk that feels light, springy and steady.

These aren’t giant transformations. They’re subtle shifts that build on each other—layer by layer—until one day you realise you’re not just avoiding pain anymore.

You’re enjoying movement again.

And here’s the best part: there’s no end to your awesome.

It’s not a destination. It’s something you can sprinkle into your day—seasoning your life with moments of clarity, ease and awareness.

Every time you move with more mindfulness, every time you pause and feel what’s happening, you step off the “just getting by” treadmill and step into possibility.

There’s No Limit to Your Awesome

...But It’s Okay to Be Flawsome, Too

Here’s the beautiful paradox: there is no ceiling to how good you can feel. No cap on comfort, coordination or curiosity. You can keep exploring and discovering new possibilities at any age.

And at the same time—let’s be real—we’re all human. We’re flawsome. Some days are off. Some days are stiff. Life can be messy and throw curveballs!

But the good news is that awareness and movement are always available. You can always come back to the floor, back to your breath, back to your spark of awesome—even if it’s just a flicker today. It’s yours to return to, whenever you’re ready.

So Why Settle?

In my book “good enough” should not be the standard when it comes to our movement and feeling good.

What if you aimed for “just a little more ease today”?

What if you could feel a spark of awesome in how you breathe, how you walk, how you show up?

That’s what Feldenkrais offers: a kind, intelligent way to explore what else is possible—and to rediscover your own ability to move and live with freedom, comfort, and curiosity.

Want to move beyond good enough?

Join a class. Lie down. Tune in. You don’t need to push—you just need to notice.

Your nervous system will do the rest.

And who knows? You might just rediscover your inner awesome. Book your class and try it today.
